Scope

1) The proposal is that Clause 5.13 of EN 12336 be amended to harmonise its requirements with those of clause 5.17 of EN 815 which has recently been amended by the ratification of EN 815 A1. Fire is a major hazard affecting persons working on shield machines and technological change in the provision of fire protection systems for shield machines has advanced since the standard was ratified. Additionally the requirements of EN 13478 "Safety of machinery " fire prevention and protection" should be considered.
2) Because of a near-fatal accident in the UK, it is proposed that the text of EN 12336 be amended to take account of the circumstances of the accident and prevent its repetition. WG4 considers that EN 12336 is inadequate in respect of the safety of persons undertaking maintenance on shields with cutter booms or backhoes (EN 12336 Figures A.2 and A.3) and now proposes that an amendment be made to EN 12336.
3) It is also proposed by WG4 that the text of EN 12336 be amended to make clear that transformer cooing fluids containing polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) were prohibited.
