European and International Standards are being developed to support the safe deployment and use of Drones in Europe and all over the world.

This includes the product family of standards EN 4709 - Aerospace series - Unmanned Aircraft Systems in support of Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/945 on unmanned aircraft systems and on third-country operators of unmanned aircraft systems.

These standards are being developed as a reply to the standardisation request (standardization request) M/567 on UAS, European Commission Implementing Decision C(2020)6148 and Implementing Decision C(2022)3398 – Standardisation request M/567 Amd 1 - standardisation request to the European Committee for Standardisation for classes C5 and C6 unmanned aircraft systems intended to be operated under standard scenarios and class C5 accessories kits in support of Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/945

International Standards are also being developed by ISO/TC 20/SC 16 - Unmanned aircraft systems on UAS in general, or covering particular types of vehicles (such as civil unmanned aircraft systems, or small UAS, or unmanned multicopter vehicles) and related systems.

ISO/TC 20/SC 17 on airport infrastructure is developing several standards applicable to drones-related airport infrastructure, such as Vertiports, or airport Infrastructure and equipment for vertical take-off and landing of UAS.

In addition, the ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee JTC1 covers standards on Telecommunications and information exchange between systems — Unmanned aircraft area network (UAAN) standards: ISO/IEC 4005 series on Unmanned aircraft area network (UAAN).

Also, the ISO/IEC JTC 1 is preparing standards on Cards and security devices for personal identification — ISO UAS license and drone/UAS security module

IEC is also developing standards for the safety and use of UAS in the fields of overhead lines visual inspection as well as for the use of drones in the nuclear field.

These standards support global and European trade and provide criteria and requirements for the safety, interoperability, training, security or traffic management of UAS / UAV and associated systems.
