Standards on Carbon Footprint

Carbon footprint standards: International (ISO and IEC) and European standards for the determination of carbon footprint (carbon foot print) and of other GHG emissions for products and services

Related standards or drafts

ISO International Standards play a pivotal role in the calculation of the carbon footprint, aiding organizations in the measurement, communication, and management of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to their products, services, and processes.

Key among these standards is ISO 14067:2018 – Greenhouse gases — Carbon footprint of products — Requirements and guidelines for quantification. This standard provides principles, requirements and guidelines for conducting and reporting a carbon footprint study, which quantifies the GHG emissions of a product. It also includes requirements for the inclusion of biogenic CO2 and goods and services from non-renewable resources.

The ISO 14064 series also facilitates climate action as it outlines clear protocols for the quantification, monitoring, reporting, and verifying of GHG emissions and removals at the organizational level. ISO 14064-1:2018 pertains to the quantification and reporting at the organization level for designing, developing, managing, reporting and verifying GHG inventories.

Together, these standards help organizations remain transparent about their environmental impact, creating trust among stakeholders. They also provide the groundwork for the application of carbon offsetting strategies (Dimension 05: Carbon neutral / Net Zero emissions). Implementing such standards can effectively concretize climate action plans, thereby facilitating a positive effect on GHG emissions reduction.
