European and International standards are an important tool to support the sustainability and the green and digital transition of industries. Several sectors are the main users of packaging, such as food and beverages, pharmaceutical, cosmetics or chemical sector.

Some packaging standards support the application of essential requirements of the Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste. Using these standards is voluntary. But manufacturers can benefit from presumption of conformity with the Essential Requirements of the Directive when packaging has been produced in accordance with harmonized standards whose references have been published in the Official Journal of the EU.
