Scope

This document aims to define a standard for secure and efficient data exchange protocols to be used for the Digital Product Passport. It will do so by defining the framework when transferring data between two parties or more. The primary objective is to facilitate seamless, reliable, and secure communication between diverse systems and applications across the internet, ensuring the integrity and authenticity of exchanged information. The standard will ensure that data is machine-readable, structured, and searchable, as well as transferable through an open interoperable data exchange network without vendor lock-in.

The scope of the proposed work is :
1. Secure Communication:
• Define protocols that ensure secure and authenticated data exchange between systems.
• Implement security measures to protect data against unauthorized access and ensure that only authorized entities can access the information.
2. Interoperability:
• Develop a framework that promotes interoperability between different types of software applications, enabling them to share data efficiently.
• Ensure compatibility across various sectors and multilingual environments, supporting a wide range of applications and use cases.
3. Ease of Use and Integration:
• Create protocols that are straightforward to implement and use, particularly focusing on mobile devices and other personal gadgets.
• Provide clear guidelines to simplify the installation, configuration, and usage processes for non-expert users.
4. Data Integrity and Traceability:
• Incorporate object identification techniques to enhance traceability and minimize product fraud and counterfeiting.
• Maintain the integrity of physical objects and electronic data throughout the value chain.
5. Documentation and Discoverability:
• Provide comprehensive guidelines for documenting the protocols and ensuring they are easily discoverable and understandable.
• Ensure that the protocols are accessible to individuals who may not have specialized knowledge in the field.
Not within scope, but will be taken into account:
• Data formats
• Data processing
• Data security

To promote interoperability, reduce costs for businesses, and align with existing European regulations and initiatives, the standard takes into account the various types of data exchange protocols already used in other legislations. Relevant existing standards are considered during the development to maintain consistency and coherence with industry practices and regulations.
