The standard primarily focuses on developing quality standards for plastic packaging for recycling (either sorted packaging or unsorted packaging whose quality is high enough). Key elements are composition: definition of targeted and untargeted material (both product related and non-product related), purity, impurities and impediments to recycling. The relevant parameters should be defined between EPR schemes and recyclers.
The standard uses two existing standards as inspiration:
- EN 643: European list of standard grades of paper and board for recycling: the concept of having accepted EU standards for collected/sorted material that enters a recycling plant
- EN 15347: Characterisation of plastics wastes: Some of the specifications in the market are also based on this standard: in order to use special prescriptive characteristics for plastics.
The standard will additionally give a framework in which it is described how the material will be treated by the recycler.
