Technical Report

Scope

The scope of this project is to develop a technical report that defines requirements, interfacing protocols and software for hybridization of quantum computing, i.e., integrating quantum computers within the classical high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure.
This technical report will detail why and how quantum computing standards need to be built in relation to classical computations, showing the cornerstone interest of hybridization. Interaction between quantum and classical parts will be detailed according to layers of the quantum stack in play.
Importantly, the report will also aim to resolve the uncertainties around the term ‘hybrid quantum computing’. It will do so by clearly defining and delineating different types of hybrid computing, e.g., vertical (application-agnostic) vs horizontal (application-dependent) hybrid quantum computing.
For hybrid classical-quantum interfaces (including hybrid algorithms and protocols), existing classical HPC standards integrating various types of accelerators will be considered and extended wherever necessary.
The report will also include a framework for classifying hybrid quantum-classical solutions, inspired by the IaaS, PaaS and SaaS classes encountered in classical computing.
The field is still at an early stage in interfacing quantum and classical computers. Hence, it is expected that this technical report will be regularly updated.
