Scope

This document specifies requirements and dimensions for Braille and raised lettering for use in indoor and outdoor areas. It sets out rules for the presentation and arrangement of the information elements so that blind and visually impaired people are able to identify, fluently read and interpret this information.

This document does not describe technical methods for producing Braille and raised lettering.

This document does neither apply to the use of Braille and raised lettering in the area of braille print and other (not permanently installed) reliefs nor to labels on medical devices, products, devices and objects of any kind. Furthermore, it does not specify the use of Braille and raised normal print and/or raised lettering in the area of electronic devices (Braille lines, Braille displays etc.) unless such tactile electronic displays are used for guiding, orientation and provision of information in the public space. In these cases, the requirements of this standard shall be taken into account.

NOTE DIN EN ISO 17351 specifies requirements for the application of Braille on packaging, preferably folding cartons as well as labels
