Standards serve as the guardians of public health and well-being, providing guidelines and the basis of regulations that govern their design, construction, operation, and maintenance. Also, ISO has a standard on Computer vision systems for the detection of drowning accidents in swimming pools  and its standard on Graphical symbols, Safety colours and safety signs which although not specific for swimming pools provide universal safety signs for accident prevention.

By adhering to these standards, pool operators can mitigate the risk of accidents such as slips and falls, diving injuries, and drownings, creating a safer environment for swimmers of all ages and abilities.

Swimming pools should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability, or mobility. Standards, such as ISO 21902, on Accessible tourism help ensure that swimming pool facilities are designed and equipped to accommodate individuals with disabilities, including accessible entrances, ramps, handrails, and specialized equipment such as pool lifts or aquatic wheelchairs. Adhering to accessibility standards promotes inclusivity and allows individuals with disabilities to enjoy the recreational and therapeutic benefits of swimming.
