Scope

This standard specifies safety requirements for stationary BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS consisting of LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES under consideration of the intended CONVERTER SYSTEM(s). The rated voltage from mains circuits or other sources (e.g. photovoltaics) does not exceed 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC.
This document applies to BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS installed in a space without a dedicated safety infrastructure such as fire suppression, ventilation, or explosion protection. Examples of such installation spaces are residential environments such as electrical installation rooms, cellars, attics, drive ways, or other areas accessible to laymen.
This standard does not apply to BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS listed below:
• [BESS, which consist of lithium metal cells,]
• BESS, for which no test specimens representative of series production are available for TYPE TESTS
Reuse and repurpose of BATTERIES and battery components require further considerations that are not subject of this standard. This does not exclude the possibility that identical BATTERIES or BATTERY SYSTEMS are not also used in other areas of application, i.e.have more than one intended use.
