CEN/TC 50 Lighting columns and spigots
European Norm
This part of EN 40 defines the design loads and methods for verification of capacities by both calculation and testing methods for lighting columns, brackets, base compartments, cableways and earthing terminals.
It applies to lighting columns not exceeding 20 m height for either post top luminaires or for Lighting Columns with brackets for side entry luminaires.
This European standard does not attempt to restrict the actual appearance or shape of the lighting column or bracket arm or the number of bracket arms. The majority of lighting columns are normally of a stepped tubular, round, octagonal or polygonal cross- section. Lighting columns may be manufactured from materials other than those listed in the foreword (e.g. wood, plastic, cast iron or combinations of these) or in other forms (e.g. lattice, hinged and telescopic).
Attachments to lighting columns other than the luminaire are not included within the normative requirements of EN 40 however, this standard defines the design loads from attachments and the methods to apply these loads to the calculation for checking capacities. Examples of attachments may include but not be limited to: signs, seasonal decorations, flower baskets, CCTV cameras, smart equipments, Internet of Things sensors, solar panels and small wind turbines. The standard should also be used for the analysis of smart poles including luminaires.
