Scope

This European Standard specifies requirements for pads for disc brakes of railway rolling stock.
This European Standard is applicable to pads designed to be fitted to disc braked rail vehicles regardless of whether they are interoperable or their operation is restricted to national networks.
The brake pad may be manufactured from any material on the basis that it conforms to 6.2 of this document, and will hereafter be called "pad".
This document defines the pad that together with the brake disk forms the friction couple which provides the dynamic brake torque. Details for nominal performance and associated tolerances are contained in Annex A to E. It also covers the static behaviour of pads used in a parking or holding brake. The use of pads with other friction coefficients is permitted if the required brake performance is achieved.
A pad is a safety critical component.
