The present document identifies recommendations and guidance for users in the field of XML for electronic data interchange. The material is the result of one of the most comprehensive undertakings to date in scoping XML/EDI, validating the use of XML for the electronic exchange of business data, and demonstrating the application of XML to electronic data interchange systems. Usage of the project material is applicable to user communities, supplier communities and standardization bodies: - User communities - Assess the benefits and risks documented in Using XML for Electronic Data Interchange - Use the Best Practices for Creating XML/EDI DTDs as a starting point for investigations into implementation of XML/EDI - The transport and healthcare communities should additionally review the XML Document Type Definitions developed as part of the XML/EDI Pilot Project for potential implementation - Vendors - Investigate project documentation on software modules with respect to development of methodologies and tools in XML/EDI - Standardization bodies
Consider the Recommendations for Standardization of XML/EDI and adopt the appropriate recommendations, with a view to achieving technical harmonisation in the areas identified through global consensus. This document also provides an overview of the background to XML in an electronic data interchange context. This document is not intended to describe the precise standards, their use, or implementation information. However, further information is available via the reference documents, the project websites as well as numerous other web resources.
