Scope

This document looks at the factors to be considered in devising a naming strategy for directory systems based on X.500 or on the derivative LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) technology. Many factors need to be considered when designing name structures, and enhancing search performance by including additional attributes; these include objectives for the service to be provided, client system capability, management issues, technical limitations, but, above all, the recognition of cultural factors in matching the directory service to its customers.
