Scope

This document specifies requirements and provides guidance for user information, user manuals, labelling, product identification, and the digitalization and management of product information for circular-designed fishing gear and aquaculture equipment containing plastics.
The document establishes requirements for the information accompanying products throughout their lifecycle to support traceability, installation, operation, maintenance, repair, reuse, refurbishment, remanufacturing, recycling and end-of-life management of components.
The document specifies the information to be provided through physical and digital means and provides guidance on the organization, accessibility and interoperability of digital product information. It also provides requirements and guidance for the use of product identification and tagging technologies where these support lifecycle traceability and circularity objectives.
The document will assess the applicability of emerging digital information frameworks, including Digital Product Passport, where relevant to ensure compatibility with European policy developments, without establishing product-specific Digital Product Passport requirements. The document may also provide guidance on the use of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, where these support the management and accessibility of product information.
This document supersedes and consolidates EN 17988-2 and EN 17988-6 into a single, coherent standard to ensure consistency of requirements and facilitate implementation by manufacturers, importers, distributors, users, repair operators, recyclers and market surveillance authorities.
