CEN/TC 256 Railway applications

Technical Specification

Scope

The document provides guidelines to evaluate the running characteristics of passenger trains that are subject to significant levels of longitudinal forces under operating conditions.
These guidelines are applicable to passenger trains that due to their composition and location of the traction units in the train composition could be subject to high longitudinal forces, such as:
— push-pull passenger trains;
— head-tail passenger trains;
— multiple units and/or fixed formations.
This document is not applicable to the following vehicles:
— special vehicles, unless they are configured as a passenger train.
This document is applicable to the assessment of rail vehicles, which:
— are newly developed (including rescue operation);
— have had relevant design modifications; or
— have changes in their operating conditions.
Furthermore it is applicable to the 1 435 mm gauge network complying with EN 13803-1 and EN 13803-2. The document is not directly applicable to:
— railways with different track layout, e.g. tramways, metros and underground railways:
— railways with gauge tracks other than 1 435 mm.
This document is not applicable to the strength of the vehicle and mounted parts, passengers and train crew vibration exposure and running comfort. This document includes the assessment of track loading quantities, but the quantification of track deterioration or track fatigue is out of the scope of this standard.
