To achieve a long service life with low maintenance, manganese cast steel is often selected as steel grade for frogs of switches and crossings.
As the frogs are exposed to high traffic loads, defects can develop over the service life. One option for managing these defects is to perform one-time or periodic non-destructive inspections. The aim of these inspections is to detect and determine the size, position, and orientation of defects on these components.
The microstructure of manganese steel castings in particular poses a challenge for the performance of ultrasonic tests. This document lists non-destructive testing methods for monitoring the condition of frogs.
