Plastics piping systems – Guidance how to use the characteristics MFR and OIT tests and to interpret the results in product standards for pipes and fittings

Scope

This document is intended to give guidance to product standard working groups on how to deal with MFR and OIT characteristics for PE and PP products under the scope of CEN TC 155 . It supports experts in the appropriate application of MFR and OIT and their specification in product standards.

Note 1: The working group dealing with a product standard should finally decide what is relevant.

Note 2 : Historically product standards are based on use of virgin materials where OIT was a convenient way of verifying the presence of a specified stabilizing package..

Note 3: Historically product standards are based on use of virgin materials where MFR was a convenient prerequisite to check processability and weldability. A review of the commonly used threshold values is required due to the emerging use of recyclates and introduction of products with other loading than piping systems (e.g. infiltration boxes, manholes, ..).
