Scope

These guidelines are intended to provide an authoritative reference that can be used to support beneficial and sustainable use of rainwater and recycled water for residential or commercial reuse. These potential water sources currently represent an underused resource.
The guidelines are intended to be used by anyone involved in the supply, use and regulation of water schemes, including government and local government agencies, regulatory agencies, health and environment agencies, operators of water and wastewater schemes, water suppliers, consultants, industry, private developers, and property managers.
These guidelines provide recommendations on how to select water reuse systems, taking into account water resources, water stress, surface water management, water supply and sewage infrastructure as well as the resulting environmental impact including carbon and ecological footprint.
The guidelines provide a logical framework for the selection of suitable options for water reuse. The intent of these guidelines is to provide the scientific basis for choosing the proper water reuse strategy and implementing those decisions in a safe and sustainable manner.
This document does not describe the design phase of a water reuse systems. It also does not cover product design for specific system components or the design and installation of water reuse systems. It helps to select suitable reuse options for the intended application.
