This document specifies a standard method for the determination of several specific types of phthalates, namely
- di-iso-butyl phthalate (DIBP),
- di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP),
- benzylbutyl phthalate (BBP),
- bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP),
- di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP),
- di-iso-nonylphthalate (DINP), and di-iso-decyl phthalate (DIDP),
- 1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, di-C9-11-branched alkyl esters, C10-rich,
- 1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, di-C8-10-branched alkyl esters, C9-rich,
in children's products and toys.
The method described is appropriate for materials made from plastics, coatings, and liquids.
To be noted: This protocol has been validated for certain types of plastic, such as polyvinylchloride (PVC) and polyurethane (PU), as well as specific paint coatings. Although the method may be useful for identifying other phthalate esters and product materials, it must be thoroughly validated.
