CEN/TC 124 Timber structures

European Norm

Scope

This European Standard sets out requirements regarding the performance of characteristics of structural (load-bearing) prefabricated wall, floor and roof elements consisting of framing members of structural timber, structural finger jointed timber, glued solid timber, glued laminated timber, laminated veneer lumber (LVL), structural prefabricated wooden beams/columns and sheeting made of wood-based panels or gypsum boards fixed mechanically on both faces, for use in service class 1 or 2 in accordance with EN 1995-1-1. At least one of the sheetings contributes to the load-bearing capacity of the element.
This European Standard also lays down procedures for Assessment and Verification of Performance of Characteristics (AVPC) and specifies marking and labelling of structural (loadbearing) prefabricated wall, floor and roof elements with mechanically fixed sheeting on both sides.
The cavities of the prefabricated elements may be filled entirely or partially with insulating materials. The exterior faces of the elements may also be covered with insulation material. This European Standard covers elements with performance characteristics of two classes being class LS (limited size) and class US (unrestricted size).
The dimensions of elements of class LS are:
– wall elements with a maximum length of 16,5 m, a maximum height of 3,8 m and of unrestricted thickness, and
– floor and roof elements with a maximum length of 16,5 m, a maximum width of 3,5 m and a maximum thickness of 1 m. The dimensions (length, width and thickness) of elements of class US are larger than those of class LS and unrestricted.
Floor elements may contain additional adhesive bonds between the framing members and the sheeting to increase the stiffness with regard to enhancement of the vibration resistance.
This European Standard specifies characteristics of load bearing and non-load bearing components for the prefabricated elements.
This European Standard applies to elements that may have openings, e. g. for windows, doors, etc. It does not apply to characteristics of incorporated doors or windows.
This European Standard does not cover curved elements.
This European Standard does not cover elements with framing members with holes except for round holes at mid depth with a diameter d ≤ 1/10 of the framing member depth.
The elements may be used in seismic areas with adequate design and materials. They are not intended for use in fatigue situations.
This European Standard applies to elements with untreated components and/or components treated against biological attack.
This European Standard does not cover components and elements treated with fire retardants.
