Technical Specification

Scope

Existing standards and ongoing work are addressing sampling, sample preparation and TEM analysis of aerosols but a unified/wholistic way/process from sampling of aerosols to TEM analysis for shape, size distribution and elemental composition are today still lacking though they are relevant for future revised REACH Annexes.
The project is aiming at providing a methodology to representatively analyse a sample of nano-objects on an electron microscopy grid to determine shape and size distributions, concentrations and elemental chemistry of the nanoparticles, complementing already existing standards on TEM analysis such as ISO/WD 21636 project. The all analytical chain will be detailed to different aspects of the optimized method to achieve a relevant assessment.
This standard is a practical document which consists in a brief explanation on this requirement implementation and specific recommendations, which are based on the conclusions of the SANOWORK EU project in exposure assessment regarding MNMs use.
Some practical examples will illustrate the MNM risk management.
