CEN/TC 217 Surfaces for sports areas

European Norm

Scope

This European Standard specifies the Essential Characteristics for synthetic turf and needle-punch or textile surface sports systems that are intended for use indoors. The Standard specifies:
- the methods for determination of performances of the Essential Characteristics,
- the methods for evaluation of the results against the threshold levels or classes of performances, where relevant,
-the way of expressing their performance,
-provisions for the systems for Assessment and Verification of Consistency of Performance,
-marking (labelling) of synthetic turf sports surfacing systems intended for indoor use. The Standard applies to synthetic turf and needle-punch or textile surface sports systems that are to be used indoors for one or more of the following sports:
• Football (11 a-side and small sided)
• Tennis (all forms)
• Rugby Union (15 a-side and small sided)
• Rugby League (13 a-side and small sided)

Synthetic turf and needle-punch or textile surface sports surfaces comprise one or more layers depending on the intended application. The upper playing surface may incorporate some form of granular infill that may contribute to the performance of the surface.

Most synthetic turf and needle-punch or textile surface sports surfaces are supplied as kits, where the individual components are supplied to site to allow the system to be assembled. The performance of the synthetic turf and needle-punch or textile surface sports surfaces can only be assessed on the complete kit.

NOTES 1 Sports performance and other additional characteristics for synthetic turf and needle-punch sports systems are specified in EN 15330-1 and EN 15330-2. 2 For many sports, especially at the higher levels of a game, the sports. governing bodies (international or national) may also have performance and quality standards that facilities need to also comply with before they can be used in competitions organised by the sports’ governing bodies. 3 Perform
