CEN/TC 256 Railway applications

Technical Report

Scope

Top-of-rail friction management is a controlled application of a substance to the top of the rail to assist with adhesion and alteration of the friction level. This can be in the form of sand, a man-made lubricant or even water, but the way it is applied can have benefits for wear, noise and safety. It can also be used with wheel flange / rail lubrication on the low rail to help with curving performance and reduce corrugations due to wheel creep.
