This document deals with methods of sampling of phytoplankton in inland waters for limnological investigations and monitoring of water quality, especially with respect to the implementation of the EC Water Framework Directive.
In practical water monitoring there has been up to now no uniform standard for sampling in stratified or mixed water bodies, with the result that phytoplankton was sampled from different depths and water zones. Since in stratified water bodies phytoplankton has a varying vertical distribution, comparability was not assured. This standard is intended to ensure uniform conditions for the field of phytoplankton sampling in inland waters.
