CEN/TC 292 Characterization of waste

European Norm

Scope

This European Standard specifies a test method for determining the leaching behaviour of monolithic wastes under dynamic conditions. This test can be used to determine the dominant release mechanisms of inorganic constituents. The method applies to regularly shaped specimens of monolithic wastes, including relatively water impermeable monoliths (for instance asphaltic materials). The method consists of a series of subsequent leachant renewal cycles, of which the contact time increases to reflect the predominant leaching mechanism. This test, in the framework of ENV 12920, is aiming at determining, as a function of time the leaching behaviour under conditions: 1) such that the released elements do not influence the leaching behaviour 2) reflecting different scenarios. The leachant is demineralized water. This test method produces eluates, which shall subsequently be characterised physically and chemically according to existing standard
methods The release results are presented as a function of time and expressed relative to the geometric surface area exposed to leaching.
