Latest European Standard EN IEC 62232:2025: Comprehensive Guidelines for Human RF Exposure Assessment from Base Stations

The latest European Standard to asess Radio Frequency RF field strength, power density and specific absorption rate (SAR) levels in the vicinity of base stations (BS), which are also called  products or equipment under test (EUT).

This European standard adopts in Europe the newly released IEC 62232:2025, an International Standard developed by IEC technical committee 106, provides essential methods for the assessment of electric, magnetic, and electromagnetic fields associated with human exposure, specifically from base stations (BS). This fourth edition, replacing the 2022 version, maintains the same technical content while offering improved clarity to prevent misinterpretations of assessment methods.

This crucial document outlines procedures for determining RF field strength, power density, and Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) in the vicinity of BS. Its scope is broad, covering intentionally radiating BS operating from 110 MHz to 300 GHz and considering ambient sources within the 100 kHz to 300 GHz range.

IEC 62232:2025 addresses various RF exposure evaluation applications:

Notably, the European Standard EN IEC 62232, which adopts this international standard, serves as a best practice guide for human exposure assessment and supporting local, national or European legislation on the topic.

The standard emphasizes the actual maximum approach for assessment and offers diverse measurement and computation methodologies for both in-situ and laboratory evaluations. It also provides guidance on reporting, interpreting, and comparing results, including for time-varying beam-steering technologies like massive MIMO in New Radio (NR) BS.

The document references external files for detailed understanding, accessible from the IEC website. While it specifies evaluation methods, it does not set exposure limits; instead, it refers users to applicable limits such as those from ICNIRP or IEEE. This comprehensive standard is vital for ensuring accurate and consistent RF exposure evaluations from base stations.

EN IEC 62232:2025, being technically equivalent to the 2022 version, supports the application of Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/1070 as amended by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2000.
