EN IEC 62991: Standardizing Source Switching Equipment (SSE) for Home Energy Efficiency

The landscape of home energy is rapidly evolving, moving towards smarter, more efficient systems incorporating local generation and storage. Central to this evolution is Source Switching Equipment (SSE), now specifically addressed for household applications by the EN IEC 62991 standard. While traditional SSE often focused purely on backup power, this new standard primarily targets Energy Efficiency within Prosumer Electrical Installations (PEI) – homes that both consume and produce energy.

Defined under EN IEC 62991, SSE for household and similar uses acts as the intelligent hub within an Electrical Energy Management System (EEMS). Its core function is to select and potentially combine power from two sources, typically the utility grid, local sources like solar panels, or energy storage units (like batteries). This allows homeowners to optimize their energy usage by prioritizing self-generated power (direct feeding or island mode), feeding excess energy back to the grid (reverse feeding mode), or utilizing stored energy when most economical. While energy optimization is key, these SSEs can also serve a backup power function during grid outages.     

EN IEC 62991 applies to SSEs integrated into fixed low-voltage installations (up to 440V AC, 125A) common in residential settings. It covers manually operated (M-SSE), remotely operated (R-SSE), and automatically operated (A-SSE) types. These can be constructed as integrated units with protective devices (Combined-SSE or C-SSE) or as non-combined units (NC-SSE) relying on external protection compliant with IEC 60364 for safety against shock and overcurrent.     

Crucially, this standard distinguishes household SSE from heavy-duty Transfer Switching Equipment (TSE) covered by IEC 60947-6-1, which are intended for industrial use by skilled personnel. SSE under EN IEC 62991 is designed for installation by instructed or skilled persons but intended for safe use by ordinary persons without requiring maintenance, suitable for typical home environments (Pollution Degree 2, Overvoltage Category III).  

EN IEC 62991 provides manufacturers and installers with clear guidelines, ensuring safety and interoperability for SSEs designed to enhance home energy management, maximize renewable energy self-consumption, and contribute to overall grid stability, marking a significant step forward for intelligent residential power systems.
