Testing methods

European and international standards for shoes, boots and other footwear cover a wide range of subjects (see below list of links of topics, such as 'substances of very high concern', or 'critical substances', or several test methods).

Leather products, such as bags and baggage, shoes & footwear, etc, are covered by certain pieces of legislation in the EU, such as:
- Product safety: the General Product Safety Directive / General Product Safety Regulation
- Chemical legislation: REACH ( and other EU chemicals legislation such as CLP),
amongst other relevant pieces of EU legislation.

Specific protective shoes, boots and other footwear are covered by the Personal Protective Equipment Regulation (PPER) in the European Union.
Footwear components: Shoes must also comply with Directive 94/11/EC relating to the labelling of the materials used in the main components of footwear for sale to the consumer.
Leather and leather products are also affected by Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 on the making available on the Union market and the export from the Union of certain commodities and products associated with deforestation and forest degradation (the so-called deforestation-free products).
Some shoe or boot components may also be affected by Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 September 2011 on textile fibre names and related labelling and marking of the fibre composition of textile products (for instance, shoe and boot laces).

Note: See also considerations for Country of origin, amongst other relevant legislation.
