Scope

The transmission of medical images via wide-area communication lines take a considerable amount of time because of the high data volume per image and the relatively low transmission speed. Image compression will reduce transmission time. In general, compression techniques should not diminish the information content of an image. Image transmission within the framework of telemedicine is a multi-vendor application. As it is impossible to implement all decompression schemes in receiving devices, a standardisation of the image transform and coding algorithms is a prerequisite for successful application of image compr.
